TORQON MX1- Vintage Australian Cast Aluminium 1970's Skateboard

This piece of skateboard history was gifted to me by Kent at Southern Man Surf in Ulladulla in May 2022.

I don't know much about this Australian brand from the 70's. I've been told they were a fairly high end complete available through sports, department & skate stores.

It is a cast Aluminium deck with a built in replaceable skid plate and truck base-plates. It features a double width rear axle that has 4 wheels fitted, 2 wheels are fitted to the front.

I gave it a good clean up and attempted to find some replacement wheels through online forums and a recent swap meet.

It seems all the Torqon wheels from the era suffered the same fate as the ones on this board, perished and crumbled by time.

As I like my collection to be rolling stock in good survivor condition the closest modern wheels I could find were the Cadillac 56mm 78A Amber / Beer reissue wheels. These wheels were originally reissued for use on boards made for the Lords of Dogtown film in 2005. They are the best modern amber coloured replacement option for boards of this era. And a new set of six for the Torqon!

I'll keep an eye out for some white ribbed rubber mat to re-do the grip pads to get it closer to the original. The grey rubber Ikea place mats look good and will work for the time being.
